(WGNO) – Another Saint bites the dust. According to multiple reports, the New Orleans Saints released linebacker Curtis Lofton. The move comes as the team tries to get below the salary cap by Tuesday afternoon.

The 28-year-old was in the middle of a five-year, $27.5 million contract with the Saints, but the announcement shouldn’t come as a shock. According to Media Insider, Ian Rapoport, the Saints tried to trade Lofton just a few days ago.

Going forward, the player to fill the linebacker position will be a flexible one. Saints defensive coordinator, Rob Ryan has said he wanted five safety-type players on the field at once.

Lofton also has solid options as the linebacker market growers thinner.
