COVINGTON, La. (WGNO) – St. Tammany Parish District Attorney Warren Montgomery announced on Thursday the indictment of 20 people accused of operating a drug ring in the parish. Seventeen of the people indicted face racketeering and drug charges.
At least one of the suspects also faces an attempted murder charge. Montgomery says 35-year-old Randy Lee Lail of Pearl River shot 23-year-old Destiny Michelle Dill as she was sitting in a car. She survived and is also a defendant in the case.
At the time of the announcement, 16 of the suspects had been arrested. Montgomery described the remaining four as dangerous because of their association with illegal drugs and the weapons and violence that often accompanies the drug trade.
Montgomery also said many of the defendants knew one another but had different jobs in the operation. Some would procure the meth or heroin while others participated by packaging or selling it. Montgomery also says some of the suspects worked as enforcers who would collect on any unpaid debts owed the operation. Together, the group worked under the name Team We, according to the district attorney.
Prosecutors say the defendants are from St. Tammany and worked primarily in the eastern side of the parish, including Slidell, Pearl River, Bush and Abita Springs.
The FBI, St. Tammany Sheriff’s Office, and Slidell and Pearl River police worked together in the investigation that Montgomery calls one of the biggest racketeering cases in parish history.
