Dallas, OR (CNN) – Jesse Helt, the homeless man who accompanied Miley Cyrus to the MTV Video Music Awards and then accepted her award for Video of the Year, made an appearance in court Tuesday and was officially arraigned on a charge of probation violation. Helt turned himself in at the Polk County Jail in late August, just a few days after the event he attended with the famous pop star. He then posted the required 10 percent of his $25,000 bail. His first court appearance on the current probation violation charge came Tuesday afternoon, and the actual probation violation hearing has been set for Oct. 7. Helt’s legal problems started back in 2010, when he and an accomplice tried to break into an apartment because the man who lived there apparently sold him bad marijuana. After that arrest, Helt repeatedly violated his probation, authorities said. He eventually moved to Los Angeles to try to find work as a model, and he had the attention of the entire world late last month when he took the stage to accept Cyrus’ award. He used the platform to call attention to the issue of youth homelessness. On Tuesday, Helt showed up 45 minutes late for his appointment, and the judge told him he’ll need to “pack a toothbrush” if it happens again, presumably implying that Helt would spend time in jail if he’s tardy for his next hearing. Helt flashed the middle finger to a FOX 12 photographer outside the courthouse.
