(WGNO) – Mount Carmel’s Katie Kampen was named Second-Team All-America by the American Volleyball Coaches Association in November.

A senior who signed with Louisiana State University, Kampen entered the state volleyball tournament with 512 kills, 73 blocks, 51 aces, and 354 digs.

And, of course, the respect and admiration of her teammates.

“She comes into the gym and starts everyone off and gets everyone going,” said Mount Carmel coach April Hagadone. “She is the first to tell someone great job, first one to tell someone to pick it up, but in her Katie way. She’s the nicest kid, so no one gets mad at her when she tells them to do something.”

Last season, the Cubs lost in the state finals in the 5th game against St. Joseph’s. The game was tied at 11 before the Redstickers reeled off the final 4 points.

Kampen said the loss motivated everyone, “Ask anyone on our team. It has been driving us this past season.”

Kampen was preseason Player of the Year, and she’s matched or exceeded the hype. Katie Kampen of Mount Carmel Academy is this week’s New Orleans Voodoo Athlete of the Week.
