WESTWEGO, La. (WGNO) — Ben Simmons of Montverde Academy, FL was nothing short of spectacular on Saturday night.
He led his team to a 92-75 thrilling victory over the Riverside Academy Rebels to claim the championship at the fifth annual Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic Saturday at the Alario Center.
Throughout the tournament, Simmons ripped through the defenses of Helen Cox, Edna Karr, and Riverside Academy, scoring a total of 98 points in his three games in the event.
Saturday night in the championship game he scored a tournament-high 39 points and did it from everywhere on the court. He scored with dunks, improved on his free throws, and hit two 3-pointers, one of which being a half-court buzzer beater at the end of the 3rd quarter.
Simmons turned it up late, scoring all 39 points in the last 3 quarters of the game, which we’ve seen before against the Karr Cougars when he scored 17 of his 25 in the second half.
Not only did he light-up the scoreboard, but Simmons demonstrated his great defensive skill and rebounding ability with four putback slams.
No matter how or when he scores, it’s hard to not notice how special and talented he is on the court, with or without the ball his presence is felt. People of Louisiana can expect to see a lot more of Ben Simmons soon as the future LSU Tiger and number one high school prospect in the country signed with the team earlier in November.
