NEW ORLEANS (WGNO)– Dozens of people came to Lafayette Square to stand in solidarity with Baltimore Friday evening.
“I think out here today, we have people who recognize that black people are human beings,” Malcolm Suber, March participant, said, “That black lives matter. And, that’s why we’re out here today.”
Waving signs and chanting the group marched in peace to the steps of the federal court house raising their voices together.
Participants called for justice and equality in the wake of Freddie Grey’s death.
“This is a moment. A moment we can all share with Baltimore and with cities around the country and world that are really seeking justice,” Naomi Doerner, participant, said.
That means that something is happening, you know from Baltimore to Ferguson, to New York these aren’t isolated incidents,” Joseph Col’on, who participated in the march, stated. “… There is a movement happening, and people need to realize, you know, people are here fighting for their right to life.”
The group called for change across the country and here in New Orleans.
“The egregious nature of disregard and disrespect for life has happened here right here in New Orleans. And, we’re here today to say that we believe we can take advantage of this moment in time, so that we don’t have to have another life taken,” a rally speaker told the crowd.
Participants say they are encouraged by the amount of people who turned up to support the cause.
Raven Crane, who came out to the rally stated, “New Orleans is kind of a small community compared to a lot of other places. But, the fact that this many people came out on their afternoon, their Friday evening, to show their solidarity is a very promising, very uplifting thing to see.”
