ST. BERNARD PARISH, La. (WGNO) — The Port of New Orleans Louisiana International Terminal Project is getting more than $226 million for the construction of a new terminal in St. Bernard Parish.

According to a release from Congressman Troy Carter, the $226,220,195 will come from the U.S. Department of Transportation for the project, slated to be built in Violet along the Mississippi River.

The release states the funding comes as part of the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America grant program through the Infrastructure Investment and Job Act.

“This grant funding is a historic step towards transforming the economic landscape of Louisiana and solidifying our position as the premier international Gulf gateway,” said Carter in the release.

At a news conference on Jan. 18, Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser and St. Bernard Parish leaders discussed a report highlighting concerns about the new facility.

The report cited the location, an increase in traffic leading to a potentially higher crash rate and environmental concerns regarding the new terminal and its impact on the parish.

Port of New Orleans leaders responded to the report, stating that the location is the best choice for the terminal and that the report ignores “key data and research from parties involved in the state’s 50-year container business.”
