JEFFERSON PARISH, La. (WGNO) — Jefferson Parish leaders are asking residents on the East Bank to conserve water following a water main break on Tuesday, Jan. 23.
According to the parish, crews are working to repair the water main break at the East Bank Water Treatment Plant on Jefferson Highway.
During this time, parish leaders are asking residents to limit non-essential water usage activities like doing laundry and washing dishes.
A boil water advisory is in place for the East Bank of Jefferson Parish. Officials are advising residents in the impacted areas to disinfect their water by bringing it to a rolling boil before using it.
Eastbound Jefferson Highway near North Arnoult Road and Shrewsbury Road will be shut down, and drivers should take alternate routes.
“Something like this, it may take six to seven hours, depending on how bad it is. Right now, we anticipate it’s a 20-inch water line, and we’re hopeful we can get it fixed within the next five to six hours. Due to the water line breaking, it buckled the street pretty badly right now, so it’s going to be at least two to three days it’s going to be closed due to the weather,” said Jefferson Parish Water Director Sidney Bazley.
The cause of the break is unknown.
Tuesday night, officials with the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport reported a loss in water pressure in the airport terminal.
Due to the lack of pressure, bathrooms and water fountains in the terminal are closed. Airport officials said prepackaged food and drinks are available.
All Catholic schools on the East Bank of Jefferson Parish will be closed Wednesday, Jan. 24, due to a lack of adequate water pressure from the main line break.
Jefferson Parish leaders said parish Head Start Centers, community centers, libraries and JPRD facilities on the East Bank of the parish will be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 24, due to possible low water pressure.
They said all other government buildings in the parish will be open.
