(WGNO) — Jefferson Parish deputies say they arrested a teenager Monday night after he was spotted in a stolen car. By the time it was over though, the suspect was bitten by a canine deputy and treated for gunshot wounds and a deputy had a large cut on his head.
Here’s how deputies say it all went down:
Monday night, someone stole a blue Toyota Corolla from a home on Carol Sue in Terrytown. Later in the evening, deputies located the car near the corner of Constantine Drive and Gentry Road in Marrero. Two deputies used their marked cruisers to try to block the car by parking in front and behind it. Then deputies approached the car from both sides.
That’s when the person driving the stolen car accelerated toward one of the deputies, hitting him and sending him onto the hood of the car where his head hit and cracked the windshield. At that point, the deputy pulled his gun and fired three shots into the car — through the windshield. The other deputy also began firing into the car.
As the driver sped away in the stolen car, the deputies at the scene called for backup and an ambulance.
A short time later, deputies located the stolen car, abandoned and running, in the 2100 block of Constantine Drive. That’s when JPSO K-9 Deputy Nitro arrived with his partner and began searching the area.
The suspect was located in the back yard of a home on Maharry Drive. As Nitro moved in, the suspect began kicking him. Nitro began to bite the suspect and other deputies moved in to make the arrest.
The deputy who was injured is identified as Kenneth Guichard. He was treated at a west bank hospital for a cut over his left eye and released Tuesday morning.
The suspect is identified as 19-year-old Equan Anderson of Gretna. Deputies say he was treated for a gunshot wound to his back and a graze wound to his head. He was booked with attempted murder of a police officer, possession of stolen property, and resisting arrest.
