NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The City of New Orleans announced plans to change the location of the New Orleans Police Department’s headquarters after decades in Mid-City.
City officials said they negotiated a 10-year lease for the 17th and 18th floors of the DXC technology building, formally known as the Freeport McMoran Building, on Poydras Street.
Chief Administrative Officer Gilbert Montaño said the city owes it to officers to get them out of an aging building and into the heart of the Central Business District.
“The environment that you create for your employees is going to be the product that those employees are able to deliver. If you don’t care where they’re at and how they’re living in their work life, how can you have such a high expectation for the product they’re delivering?” said Montaño.
The NOPD headquarters has been in Mid-City at 715 Broad St. for decades.
Montaño said to the current NOPD headquarters is a “black hole” for the city’s money due to endless repairs and upgrades that he said could cost around $20 million.
