NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — New Orleans’ own Woldenberg Park, overlooking the riverfront, has been nominated as one of the 10 Best Riverfront Parks in USA Today’s Readers Choice Awards.
Leaders with the Audubon Nature Institute said Woldenberg Riverfront Park first opened to the public in 1989. Since then, its 14 acres of grass, trees and walkways have given residents and visitors a view of the Mighty Mississippi winding its way to the Gulf of Mexico.
The park is operated by the Audubon Nature Institute and is home to the Audubon Aquarium and Audubon Insectarium.
During festival season in New Orleans, it becomes the ground for several fests like the French Quarter Festival, Seafood Festival, Oyster Festival and Lundi Gras during carnival season.
In the summer, families can cool down at the splash pad in front of the aquarium.
“This park is the crown jewel of the New Orleans riverfront,” said Audubon Nature Institute President and CEO Ron Forman. “We are honored that the hard work our team puts in to keep this park looking so beautiful has helped us earn a place among the top riverfront parks in the nation.”
According to Audubon leaders, the park is set to undergo an expansion once the “Riverfront for All” project begins construction in the summer. They said the work will expand the parkland from Spanish Plaza two more miles to connect with Crescent Park making it one of the largest series of riverfront parks in the country.
Audubon leaders are asking the public to support Woldenberg Riverfront Park by submitting votes to win the overall completion through the USA Today’s 10 Best website.
The results will be announced on April 8.
