NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Any local will say that there’s more to New Orleans than the French Quarter, but trying to explain to visitors how special our city is and where to go for the best crawfish when they’re in season could take hours.
No one can deliver tours better than a local. FuhWe is an app for iOS that will connect the tourists that visit our city, to locals who want to show them around and give them a real New Orleans experience.
FuhWe is the brainchild of Grenada citizens, Patricia Maher and Shawn Louis, whose passion for travel inspired them to connect locals to tourists. The name pronounced “fa-we” is a Caribbean expression meaning “for us.”
FuhWe founders want to create an authentic, safe, local experience, but also contribute to the sustainability of destination cities, like New Orleans.
There are seven categories to choose from: art, culture, entertainment, food/beverage, history, music, and sports.
Say you are visiting New Orleans for a convention and only have two hours free for the afternoon but want to grab some local eats. Simple! Open the app, choose the food and beverage category, connect with your host and you’re on your way.
The personalized experiences vary depending on the host, length, and activities done during the experience.
FuhWe is currently vetting hosts for the app. Maggie Roberts, PR representative for the app, said “It’s a great way to earn some cash and keep the money from tourism right here in New Orleans. It benefits our economy and gives tourists a one of a kind experience that will keep them coming back! It’s like Airbnb, but instead of a place to stay you get an experience.”
It’s tourism made simple. The app will be exclusive to New Orleans when it launches this month, but they intend to take it worldwide.
Locals tour guides receive payment through direct deposit once the experience is completed and all explorers have rated their hosts within 48 hours.
