NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Severe weather is affecting Southeast Louisiana on Wednesday, April 10. Here’s what you need to know.

Weather

Widespread thunderstorms are forecast Wednesday across the central Gulf Coast, some of which may produce strong wind gusts and tornadoes. Locally, heavy rain will also be possible with these storms with street flooding possible.

School Closures

Most schools in the area are closed Wednesday. Check our full list for the latest closures.

Officials with the St. Tammany Parish Public School System announced that all schools within the school system will remain closed on Thursday, April 11, following Wednesday’s severe weather.

They said they are in the process of evaluating school buildings and storm damages. The school system also reports several schools are still without power.

  • Lake Avenue to West Esplanade

  • Esplanade to Loyola
  • Lake from Veterans to Hammond Highway

Travel

  • NOLA Ready announced that neutral ground parking is permitted at this time.
  • The I-10 Louisiana Welcome Center in Slidell is closed due to a loss of power.
  • Louis Armstrong International Airport officials are advising travelers to check the status of their flights with their airlines because some have been pushed back or canceled.
  • The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority has continued all bus, streetcar and ferry services.

Safety and Shelter

  • Jefferson Parish leaders said Terrytown Playground at 641 Heritage Ave. will be open Wednesday for those in mobile homes in need of sturdy shelter.
  • The John Slidell Park Gym and Recreation Center in Lacombe and Creekside Junior High in Pearl River are open in St. Tammany Parish.

Power Outages

  • Entergy’s outage map indicates there are thousands of people without power Wednesday. There are more than 300 without power in Orleans Parish at this time.
  • Cleco’s outage map indicates there are thousands of people without power on Wednesday. There are more than 27,000 people without power in St. Tammany Parish.

Resources

  • The American Red Cross of Louisiana and St. Tammany Parish officials are providing care for nearly 60 people displaced from apartment building following reportedly multiple tornados that touched down Wednesday, April 3.
    • Anyone staying in a Red Cross shelter should bring prescriptions, extra clothes, pillows blankets, hygiene supplies, important documents and important supplies for children.
  • All St. Tammany Parish Government offices will be closed on Thursday, April 11, due to employees being deployed into the community to help residents.

New Orleans

The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans released an update stating Wednesday’s heavy rain surpassed capacity, causing more time to be needed to clear the streets of floodwaters.

SWBNO officials said an after-action report will be completed and their team is “shifting available power assets where needed.”
