NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — On Monday, April 29, officials with Xavier University of Louisiana and Ochsner Health gave an update on the development of their new medical school.

According to a news release, XULA and Oschner announced the location of the Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine during a signing ceremony at Benson Tower in New Orleans.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell, Congressman Troy Carter, President of Xavier University of Louisiana Dr. Reynold Verret, Ochsner Health CEO Pete November and other educational and community leaders attended the event.

XULA leaders also said the school will be in BioDistrict New Orleans, located inside Benson Tower.

“Ochsner Health is committed to meeting the needs of the diverse communities we serve, and we are honored to continue our work with Xavier University of Louisiana to improve the health and wellbeing of New Orleans, our state and region,” said November.

Ochsner Health officials said the program will help address the need for more physicians while offering opportunities for those who believe they won’t be able to attend medical school.

“Because of their circumstances, whatever it is, they don’t hope, don’t have the hope that someday they, too, can be sitting here with one of those white coats, with the ability to take care of people. We are here today to give that young man or woman hope,” said November.
