COVINGTON, LA (WGNO) — Covington police converged on the only exit for cars at Covington High School this afternoon.  They were there to look for one thing!

Dun dun DUUNNNN!

Relax.  They were all smiles and came bearing gifts.  Officers stopped each car to make sure the students were wearing their seat belts.  This is the third year for the department’s “I got caught” program.  Students who get caught wearing their seat belts receive a T-shirt.  Those not wearing a seat belt receive a lecture.  No tickets were handed out.

Police say car crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States.  A third of all teen deaths are a result of car accidents.

Earlier this year, Covington police organized a contest for students to create and submit their designs for this year’s shirts.  The winner was Hadlee Calvert from Christ Episcopal School.

Police also rallied support from sponsors to pay for the shirts.

Covington High School was the third school visited this year.  Earlier in the week, police brought the program to Saint Scholastica Academy and Saint Paul’s.
