GARYVILLE, La. (WGNO) — St. John the Baptist Parish deputies are investigating a double shooting that left one person dead and the other wounded.
According to deputies, around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, they were called to the Garyville area to the scene of a shooting on Sherman Walker Street.
Upon arrival, deputies learned that two people had been wounded by gunfire and that one was pronounced dead on the scene.
Crime scene tape still surrounds a pole along Sherman Walker Street in Garyville, where the double shooting occurred.
“She’s a little younger than me but I have known her since she was a kid,” said a resident.
One resident who knew the victim tells WGNO that he heard the gunshots.
“It started down the street. I heard the shooting on the other street, the next over. A couple of shots and the next thing you know I came back home, and all the police officers, paramedics and ambulance were down the street,” said the resident.
“The girl had just bammed right over there,” said a resident.
Another eyewitness says he ran over to the car after it had crashed into the pole. He says after getting close to the car, he noticed blood everywhere.
“She was still accelerating the vehicle because she was wounded. We got her foot off the accelerator and I called my son because they had one on the side and on the other, and he stayed over there until the paramedics came,” said the eyewitness.
While trying to make sure the driver and passenger were okay, they noticed a child in the back seat.
“The kid went first before everything. We let the kid out and one was hurt right over there between the sign and the wire and she was bleeding. We stayed with the one in the car,” said the eyewitness.
He believes getting people to speak up will be the hard part but says there must be justice for the victim as she was a mother.
“I don’t know the situation that happened, but it’s a tragedy you know. Things don’t need to be happening like that. Everybody needs to get along put the guns down and the violence down,” said a resident.
No further information is available at this time. Deputies are in the process of gathering evidence and information to determine a possible suspect and motive.
