BATON ROUGE, La. (WGNO) – A bill that would require women to wait three days before getting an abortion has cleared its final legislative hurdle.
If Gov. John Bel Edwards signs off, Louisiana will become the sixth state to require women to wait 72-hours between the time they first see a doctor and having the procedure. The abortion waiting period is currently 24-hours.
Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Utah also require women to wait three days.
Supporters say the bill would give victims of coercion and violence more time to reach out for help.
Opponents say it puts an undue burden on women.
Edwards has said he plans to sign it.
