METAIRIE, La. (WGNO) — Two people are dead following a crash that happened on Interstate 10 in the early morning hours of Monday, June 17.
The Louisiana State Police reported the crash, which caused several lane closures, occurred going westbound near Bonnabel Boulevard around 12 a.m.
LSP officials said a Kia Soul and a Toyota Tundra crashed on I-10 West near Bonnabel, leaving the Kia Soul disabled and then abandoned.
The LSP reported a Toyota Corolla, driven by 78-year-old Carlos Martinez, then hit the abandoned Kia Soul while driving west.
Martinez got out of the car and “attempted to notify oncoming traffic” when an Infiniti driven by 66-year-old Betty Savoie reportedly collided with the back of the Toyota Corolla.
According to the LSP, Martinez “was struck by one of the vehicles.”
LSP officials said a BMW driving west on I-10 then hit the back of the Infiniti.
Martinez and Savoie suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.
LSP officials said the investigation is ongoing, and routine toxicology samples were collected.
