BELLE CHASSE, La. (WGNO) – Plaquemines Parish President Amos Cormier Jr. died Thursday morning following a hospital visit earlier in the week.

Cormier was admitted into Ochsner Westbank hospital Tuesday, and underwent a procedure for a blocked artery, parish officials said in a statement.

President Amos Cormier was a husband, a father, a brother, a coach and a friend. He became Plaquemines Parish President in 2015.

Please join us in praying for the Cormier family as they mourn this loss, and we ask that everyone respect this tragic situation.

President Cormier had a deep pride for Plaquemines Parish and we will honor him by continuing to work towards making our Parish one of the best places in Louisiana to live, work, and raise our families.

Flags at half-staff

St. Bernard Parish President Guy McInnis has ordered all parish flags to be flown at half-staff in memory of Cormier.

McInnis and Cormier were both long time coaches and teachers in their communities. The two newly elected parish presidents quickly became good friends after taking office.

“President Cormier was a kind and gentle man and will be missed. He was a great leader for the residents of Plaquemines Parish,” said President McInnis.
