NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — New Orleans police say an armed robbery and aggravated assault attack ended when the suspect couldn’t start the car he was hoping to steal.

It happened on June 17 in the 2700 block of Constance Street.

According to police, a woman was unloading groceries from her car when a man grabbed her from behind, pressed a gun to the back of her neck, and demanded her key fob.

That’s when the woman started screaming and pushed the gun to the side.

Police say the robber grabbed the woman’s key fob, pushed her to the ground, then tried to leave the scene but couldn’t start the car.

At that point, a neighbor approached and asked the woman if she was okay.  That’s when the robber got out of the car — that he was unable to start — and pointed the gun at the neighbor, ordering her to leave.

According to the NOPD, the car had a clutch-less manual transmission and the robber just couldn’t figure it out.  Police say it was the manual transmission that thwarted the robbery.  They even tweeted about it.

The attack ended when the robber opted to run from the scene.  No shot were fired.  If you click on the video button above, you can see surveillance camera footage from the area that police say shows the attacker.

According to police, if convicted, the suspect could face between 10 to 99 years in prison.
