NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Louisiana State Police, the New Orleans Police Department and the Kenner Police Department gathered along the bank of Bayou St. John Tuesday night, July 2, after a police car crashed into the water.

A short time later, only the Kenner officers remained at the scene because it was their department’s car that was in the bayou.

According to Kenner police, around 10:45 p.m., officers responded to a shoplifting call from a business in the 800 block of West Esplanade Avenue. Police describe the shoplifting suspects as two women who left the scene in a gold, four-door Honda SUV.

Moments later, a Kenner officer reported spotting the car taking an eastbound ramp on Interstate 10 toward New Orleans and followed it.

The chase ended when the officer, according to police, lost control of his car and crashed into Bayou St. John near the intersection of Esplanade Avenue and Moss Street.

Kenner police say nobody was hurt and the suspects got away.
