NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Tropical Storm Beryl is currently located about 125 miles east of Brownsville, Texas, in the western Gulf of Mexico. This storm is moving northwest and is expected to make landfall on the Texas coast Monday morning.

For our area, while Beryl remains far enough away to not bring direct impacts, it is influencing our weather in some notable ways.

The storm is suppressing thunderstorm activity for now. Additionally, dry air wrapping around the eastern side of Beryl is keeping our region relatively dry. This pattern is expected to hold through tonight and into Monday morning.

A Heat Advisory has been issued for most of the New Orleans metro area, but some southwestern Mississippi counties and a few neighboring Louisiana parishes, as well as the northern halves of the coastal Mississippi counties, have been excluded. These areas have slightly lower humidity levels, which should help keep heat index values lower.

After the Monday, we’ll need to keep an eye on the remnants of Beryl. As the storm is absorbed by a larger weather system, it will move east across the lower Mississippi Valley. This could bring heavy rainfall to some areas, especially from Tuesday through Wednesday.

Forecast models show a possibility of significant rain due to high moisture levels and unstable atmospheric conditions. These rain bands are unpredictable, but they could lead to localized areas of very heavy rainfall.

For the rest of the week, we expect a return to our typical summer weather. The broad weather system affecting much of the country today will move eastward by Thursday. This will allow for an area of high pressure to build, leaving our area in a pattern of daily pop-up afternoon thunderstorms due to the usual daytime heating.

Temperatures are expected to drop closer to normal, which will provide a welcome break from the recent extreme heat.
