(WGNO) — Louisiana State Police are praising an off-duty officer and two Good Samaritans for saving the life of a driver whose SUV ran off the road and sank in a bayou.

Troopers say the crash happened a little before 6:00 Wednesday night, July 27, on LA 20 near the Bayou Chevreuil Bridge in Saint James Parish.

According to troopers, a Chevy Trailblazer left the road and was submerged in the bayou.  An off-duty police officer for the Port Allen Police Department, identified as Rober Cannon, saw the crash and went into the water to rescue the driver.  Troopers say Cannon was helped by two fishermen, Gabriel Rouge and Kevin Scioneaux, who provided a life jacket and kayak to float the driver to safety.

The driver of the car is identified as 30-year-old Aaron Jackson of Houma. Troopers say he suffered moderate injuries in the crash and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Troopers say the quick actions of Cannon, Rouge, and Scioneaux prevented the crash from becoming a tragedy.
