NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Louisiana State Treasure John Kennedy wants you to watch out for a scam involving unclaimed property.

He says letters are circulating that claim to be from the “National Association of Unclaimed Property or NAUPA.”

Kennedy says the letters instruct people to buy a Federal State Registration Stamp to claim a sweepstakes award that’s ended up in Unclaimed Property.

The letters also warn that the sweepstakes will be liquated with the proceeds divided between NAUPA and a charitable organization unless money for the stamp is sent.

Kenny says this is a scam. And not real.

NAUPA is a legitimate organization. However, it does not distribute Unclaimed Property.

Anyone receiving such a letter should contact the Louisiana Department of the Treasury’s Unclaimed Property Program at 1-(888)-925-4127.
