COVINGTON, La. (WGNO) — Melissa Seal just wanted to help the animals – and shelters – affected by the flood when she posted a plea to her 300 Facebook friends.
She didn’t expect the post to be shared more than 40,000 times in three days.
“I’ve been doing rescue for years and when the flood first started, I was down in the water helping pull the animals and all out of it,” Seal said. “When I came home last Tuesday night, I just started posting some of the pictures and letting people around the country know what was going on here in Louisiana, and that our humane societies were over filled with animals. ”
She also asked her friends to send dog food, thinking she might get a few bags.
Instead, she’s needing help handing out the bags she’s received, and running out of room at her own house to store the rest.
“The Post Office was was shocked. They sent three postmasters out here just to take pictures and see what was going on because they had never seen that size delivery.”
Seal said donations have come from across the country as well as South Africa, the United Kingdom, and Australia.
“It just completely restores your faith in humanity. The gratitude… It literally is overwhelming,” she said.
But she needs help. It’s a round-the-clock operation to get the animal feed and supplies delivered to shelters.
