COVINGTON, LA (WGNO) — Covington police say they’re dealing with a series of car burglaries. On Saturday, three cars had their windows smashed and valuables stolen, and it’s the second time it’s happened in the past few weeks. The caper is the latest to roll on the Wheel of Justice.
The burglaries happened in or around Bogue Falaya Wayside Park. On Monday, a team of officers walked along the parking lot there and checked to see which drivers left valuables in plain sight. Those who did received a warning notice on their windshields informing them about the recent car burglaries.
Police say the thieves are stealing credit cards and other personal information and going to banks in southern Louisiana to withdraw money. They released photos of a suspect and the gray Chevy Equinox that she was driving during a trip to one of the banks. Police say the woman driving the car is directly connected to some of the burglaries.
Covington police have issued similar warnings in the past. In those cases, police were worried about people leaving their car doors unlocked. This latest string of cases deals with cars that are locked but have their windows smashed.
Either way, police want people to avoid leaving valuables in plain sight. They say it’s especially important this time of year because criminals are looking for cars with Christmas presents or other valuables inside.
