The following is a statement from that can be attributed to NOLA Public Schools (NOLA-PS) Superintendent Dr. Henderson Lewis, Jr. regarding a shooting incident connected to George Washington Carver High School earlier today:

“NOLA Public Schools (NOLA-PS) is deeply saddened by today’s shooting incident that occurred this morning (October 15, 2019) connected to a George Washington Carver High School student. NOLA-PS’ Senior Safety & External Affairs Officer has been in regular contact with school leaders and the New Orleans Police Department regarding the incident. NOLA-PS can confirm a student attending the school was shot near the campus by an unknown gunman. School leaders confirm the school was put on temporary lock down and police arrived within minutes. All students and faculty are safe on campus. The injured student was transported to the hospital by EMS. We will continue to work with all parties to monitor the situation.

The Carver High School community continues to mourn the tragic loss of three students this school year. This senseless violence is a reminder of our joint responsibility to help children and youth feel safe and secure. It is up to all of us, to teach our youth about how to engage with others in a peaceful, tolerant, and respectful manner.”

NEW ORLEANS – The NOPD is responding to reports of shots fired near George Washington Carver High School.

The shooting was reported shortly after 9:30 A.M. near the school.

City officials say GW Carver will dismiss school at 1 P.M. today and there will be no after school activities.

Around 3 P.M. today they will provide an update, including the plan for school tomorrow, and information for students needing additional support.

Initial reports are that this is not an active shooter situation, and that the situation has been contained.

Multiple shell casings can be seen on the campus.

The NOPD has confirmed that one juvenile has been shot in the hip.

The injuries are not life threatening
