CHALMETTE, La. (WGNO) — St. Bernard Parish officials held a press conference early Wednesday morning in response to Hurricane Ida.
In the conference, St. Bernard Parish President Guy McInnis and local leaders asked residents to be patient.
Officials addressed gas is one of the biggest problems the community is facing. Leaders urged the community to get gasoline in approved gasoline containers. They also reminded the community to be safe while putting gas. Ground the cans and do not use cell phones around the gasoline pumps.
Leaders also addressed that the Eastern part of the parish is open and passable, but they encourage citizens to use a vehicle that can get through a foot of water if going to that area.
A curfew is still in place for the parish. Dusk till dawn.
While driving, the parish community is reminded to drive slow and pay attention.
St. bernard Parish will be handing out tarps at the government complex today. The Parish Government offices will be closed until further notice.
As for power, Entergy is working closely with St.Bernard Parish officials.
St. bernard Parish President, Guy McInnis said, “We are confident that we are going to get energy sooner than later.”
He added, “We are looking at a few weeks maximum in my mind.”
McInnis informed residents Walmart is open and many restaurants are open for business, encouraging residents to support the local restaurants.
