Ham, Meunster, & Strawberry “Grilled Cheese”
Ingredients:
- Marble Rye Bread
- Softened unsalted butter
- Strawberry Preserves
- Sliced Ham
- Sliced Muenster cheese
- Powdered Sugar
- Fresh Strawberries
Procedure:
- Spread one side of one slice of bread with approx. 1 ½ Tablespoons of Strawberry Preserves.
- Place a slice of Muenster cheese on top of the preserves.
- Place approx. 3 ounces of thin sliced ham on top.
- Place one more slice of cheese on top of ham.
- Top with second slice of bread.
- Spread a thin layer of butter on the outside of the bread
To cook:
- Pre-heat a Panini grill or nonstick skillet over medium heat.
- Place the sandwich and allow to brown on each side, lightly pressing down with a spatula.
- Remove and sprinkle the top of the sandwich with powdered sugar from a shaker or fine mesh strainer.
- Cut sandwich in half. Place one small or half of one large strawberry on top of each sandwich half. Secure with a decorative pick.
- Serve immediately.
NOTES:
- There are near endless variations to this sandwich. Experiment with different types of meats, cheeses, breads and jams or jellies.
- Try heating the meat slightly in a microwave just prior to building the sandwich. This will help the cheese to melt without the sandwich over browning in the skillet.
- Olive oil could be substituted for the butter.
Sandwiches could be made up to a day in advance and held refrigerated and wrapped in plastic. If so, do not butter the bread until just prior to cooking.
