NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — It got greasy at The Royal Sonesta Hotel Friday morning during the 54th annual “Greasing of the Poles.”
WGNO’s Good Morning New Orleans Meteorologist Brooke Laizer knows a thing or two about greasing a pole. She’s the greasing champion of 2023!
Laizer said it takes a support system to be the best greaser, along with confidence and the ability to let go and have fun on the pole.
Greasing the poles has meaning beyond just having fun. When asked why we do it, hotel manager Al Groos said, “Well, there’s two reasons. Number one: safety and security of our guests. And number two: we have some fun. A whole lot of greasing going on.”
The Royal Sonesta is the place, and the greasers provide the motion.
Triece, this year’s champion, said, “I really feel like I engaged with the crowd. I love vibing off people’s energies.”
The entire 300 block of Bourbon Street was packed with people, all wanting to get a peek at the slippery pole smearing. But one greaser’s moves had the most pole purpose.
“I know I was going to have a bit of competition. I’m glad I stole the show,” Triece said.
She took home her prize — a giant engraved bottle of Moet champagne and bragging rights.
