Mardi Gras crowds on routes prompt changes to RTA services

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Leaders with the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority announced there will be changes made to streetcar services due to Mardi Gras safety concerns.

In a post to social media, RTA leaders said streetcar services will be pushed bac, citing the heavy presence of people setting up for parades along St. Charles Avenue between Peniston and Amelia streets.

They said blocking the right of way on bus and streetcar routes impacts service and delays riders from getting to their destinations.

RTA officials say riders can board the streetcars at the normal stops until 2:15 p.m., four hours ahead of Krewe of Druids on Wednesday, Feb. 7. After that, streetcar service will be replaced with bus service until tracks are cleared.

At 4:15 p.m., Two hours before the parade starts, buses will switch over to detour routes.

“We respectfully ask paradegoers to observe the rules that are in place to create a safe Carnival experience for everyone,” said RTA leaders.
