SLIDELL, La. (WGNO) — Revelers in Slidell are getting ready for the Krewe of Selene Parade.

The parade will start Feb. 9, Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the corner of Spartan Drive and Highway 11 before making its way down Highway 11, onto Highway 190, and ending at Corporate Square Drive.

Riders were busily preparing their floats Friday morning at Fritchie Park but having fun while doing so.

Spectators can expect 18 floats, each embodying this year’s theme “Selene’s Magical Story Book.”

But what spectators will really be eying is the krewe’s signature throw — a purse!

“We have about 8,000 to 10,000 purses. The number is varying from post to post, but there’s going to be a purse tracker in those purses, so that we can keep track of where they are,” said Catherine Leach, the krewe’s parade and social media officer. “So, if you do catch a purse, please go to the tracker and let us know.”

2024 marks the Krewe of Selene’s 26th year, participating in Mardi Gras in Slidell.

“We are the premiere, all-women’s, female krewe in Slidell, and we always ride the Friday before Mardi Gras,” said Dayna Coslan, the parade and social media chairwoman for the Krewe of Selene. “We’re the last parade in Slidell, and it’s just a great sisterhood. We just absolutely love it, and it’s like we kick off Mardi Gras weekend.”
