NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Many New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian tribes hit the streets on Fat Tuesday to show off the suits that took up to a year to create.

The tribes came out in neighborhoods across the city on Tuesday, Feb. 13 in handcrafted, beaded and feathered suits dawning every color of the rainbow.

The origins of the Black masking tradition date back over a century and pay homage to the shared history of the struggle of the formerly enslaved and indigenous people of Louisiana.

WGNO’s LBJ and photojournalist Christopher Leach traveled across the city to showcase their incredible work.
