Mississippi inmate captured wearing only a sheet after escape

RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – Authorities said an inmate was captured wearing only a sheet after escaping from a Mississippi prison on Friday, July 5.

Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey said the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) had contacted the sheriff’s office around 12:45 p.m. MDOC officials reported they had located blood and clothing on the exterior fence of the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility (CMCF), and they suspected a possible escape.

Rankin County deputies, along with the Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP), Brandon police, Pearl police and Madison police, responded to assist MDOC with a perimeter and search.

During the manhunt, Bailey said a citizen called to report a suspicious man wearing only a sheet in her neighborhood. They responded to the area, and K-9 “Voodoo” was deployed to track the suspect.

Within two minutes, Bailey said “Voodoo” had tracked and located the escapee in a lake near the subdivision. MDOC took custody of the escapee, who was identified as Dwayne Martin.

WJTV 12 News reached out to MDOC about this incident, and they are conducting an internal investigation.

Martin was being held at the CMCF after being sentenced on March 14, 2024, to 20 years to serve and five years of probation for residential burglary in Forrest County.
