DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (WGNO) – A Florida brewery has come up with an idea that could be a game-changer for protecting marine animals around the world.

Not only are these six-pack rings biodegradable, but they are also edible, too.

Some of the plastic rings used to package beer cans ends up in the ocean, posing a serious threat to wildlife. The marine animals get tangled in the rings and also end up dying from hunger because they ingest the plastic and clog their digestive systems.

According to GreenPeace, 1 million birds and 100,000 marine mammals and sea turtles die every year because of the plastic rings.

A Saltwater Brewery spokeswoman said Americans drank 6.3 billion gallons of beer in 2015. Of that, about half was sold in cans.
