METAIRIE, La. (WGNO) – Say “exotic pet” and most people think of a parrot or a python. But a rat?

Dr. Gregory Rich, Director of West Esplanade Veterinary Clinic and Bird Hospital, tells WGNO’s Susan Roesgen why rats make good pets!

Dr. Rich says that rats are social creatures and do well in pairs.  He also says pet rats do best in a bi-level cage that gives them room to explore and exercise.

And rats won’t thrive on table scraps.  They need commercially-made rat “chow” that supplies their nutritional needs.
