Low cost rabies vaccinations available this Sunday

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Just like the other members of your family, it’s important to keep your furry friends healthy and well. That’s why the Louisiana SPCA has stepped up to make sure Orleans Parish residents can get their rabies vaccination and license for a low cost this Palm Sunday.

According to Louisiana SPCA Communications Director Alicia Heyefele, “Not everyone in New Orleans has an easily accessible vet clinic, so being able to provide these vaccines at nine different firehouse locations throughout New Orleans, we’re able to hit several different neighborhoods, all in this four hour time span.”

From 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at select firehouses in the city, a rabies vaccination and license for Orleans Parish will cost only $15. And the rabies vaccination isn’t just for your pet’s health, but it’s also good for your health as well.

Dr. Gregory Rich of the Avian and Exotic Pet Hospital of Louisiana stresses it’s not just for the health of the animals: “It’s more important for the human factor to make sure that our dogs and cats are vaccinated. If a human gets bit by a stray dog, a stray cat, or even an owned dog or cat that hasn’t been vaccinated, then one, that animal has to be quarantined, and two, every physician is pretty much going to mandate that the human goes through rabies prophylaxis treatment which is a series of injections”

In addition to vaccinating your pet, the license also helps if your pet is lost or stolen. Veterinarians and animal control workers can notify you if your pet is found by the information on the tag you received after your pet has been vaccinated. So it can help you be reunited to your loved one much quicker if they go missing.

All animals must be on a leash or in a carrying case, and the vaccinations are $15, cash only, and are located at the following firehouses in Orleans Parish:
