LUTCHER, La. (WGNO) –  It’s the Christmas tradition you won’t see anyplace else – the lighting of the bonfires along the Mississippi River.

And before the fires start for Papa Noel, here’s a look at the building of the bonfires in St. James Parish.

Lowell Roussel, one of the festival organizers and bonfire builders, said it’s a real family affair, with great food, carnival rides, live entertainment and more.

The festival takes place Dec. 9, 10 and 11 at Lutcher Recreational Park in Lutcher.

The three-day event is a prelude to the lighting of the bonfires on Christmas Eve. It’s a tradition that’s unique to St. James Parish.
