Watch our Beaches & Towns series all this week on News with a Twist at 6pm and 10pm!

BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss.  (WGNO) – Ready for a beach getaway? The Gulf Coast is full of fantastic options and News with a Twist’s Travel Girl, Stephanie Oswald, is taking us to different beaches and towns every day this week.

For this escape, you only need to hop on I-10 and drive east for a little more than an hour. You’ll soon find yourself in Bay St. Louis, where the historic train depot is a perfect first stop. That’s where you’ll find the Hancock County Tourism Bureau and the Alice Moseley Folk Art Museum.

Unwind with a stroll through the historic district, which includes a cemetery that’s home to two of the town’s four amazing “Angel Trees”—dead trees, transformed into pieces of art. The other two overlook the beach. They are the handiwork of chainsaw artist Dayle Lewis. The original angel tree was a refuge for three people and a dog during Katrina.

A little more than two miles of white sand is a slice of heaven for people—and for four-legged beach lovers too! This is the only beach on the Mississippi Gulf Coast that’s dog-friendly.

If you’re day-tripping, there’s a brand-new comfort station where you can freshen up before getting back in the car. And if you come by boat, the first four hours at the day pier are free of charge! Need more time? Overnight docking is just $1 per foot of your vessel.

Mayor Les Fillingame says his city’s harbor is unique.

“Its attachment to downtown Bay St. Louis makes it totally different than any other harbor on the coast. Every other harbor basically is for keeping boats. The Bay St. Louis harbor is for parking your boat while you’re doing something else,” says Mayor Fillingame.

Convenience is the name of the game in Bay St. Louis, where restaurants, shops, attractions and the beach are all so close together.

Try an Ugly Pizza at the Ugly Pirate Bar & Café, where you can pair your pie up with one of 16 craft beers. The tiny bar is adorned in pirate paraphernalia and it’s packed during Pirate Day in the Bay. This year, the dates are June 25-27.
