Winter weather can wreak havoc on the best-laid travel plans. Here’s some advice for dealing with delays.

First, if you absolutely need to be somewhere, go for the early morning flight. Planes departing at 5 a.m. or 6 a.m. have probably been parked at the airport overnight. So, there’s less chance of a delay.

Second, stay in touch with your airline and your airport. When problems arise, it’s critical that your airline has your correct email address and cell phone number.

Also, airports have websites packed with information–not only flight info, but also the latest news on retail shops, dining options and services. You might want to know where to find the post office, or if your layover airport has an airport chapel.

Next tip: try to be a carry-on traveler! If you don’t check a bag, it’s easier to switch flights. Traveling light is key to flexibility. So, ship your gifts ahead of time and plan to purchase bulky items, such as diapers, once you arrive at your destination.

In the case of a lengthy delay, consider purchasing a day pass for an airline club, usually less than fifty dollars. Some locations offer access to showers. And, all provide snacks, stocked bars, and a more spacious place to relax — or get work done.

One last tip: if you are faced with a delay, get on the phone to re-book. Don’t just follow the crowd lining up at the service desk. Even during the holiday crunch, you will usually get faster service by calling your airline directly.

There you have it, the best ways to deal with delays.
