NEW ORLEANS (WGNO)- The self-proclaimed “Flamingo Girl” is celebrating her fight against a rare form of cancer this afternoon with a second line parade through the Marigny.
Dozens of friends and family members including the dance troupe: Operation Dance New Orleans and The Red Wolf Brass Band took to the streets to raise awareness for angiosarcoma. Angiosarcoma is a rare and vicious cancer that caused 35-year old, Vashti Hardouin from Metairie to lose her right leg.
She’s known as “Flamingo Girl” because she says she can identify with the beautiful pink birds now that she only has one leg. Vashti is currently trying to raise money to buy a prosthetic leg.
The parade today was all about spreading the word about angiosarcoma and show people that she’s a survivor. The support she’s received from her family and friends and the entire community is something she will always cherish and remember.
“Flamingo Girl” wants to be a positive force in people’s lives by spreading this message, “Follow your heart and your intuition as to what you need to do to take the next step in your life.”
