Lent kicks off with ashes and things we’re giving up. Lent also is a time of traditions, and among the more popular traditions is seafood on Friday.
We set off in search of where folks were preparing and would up at Read Seafood in New Orleans East. It was early, before the day’s rush, but they were busy, nonetheless, preparing for the Friday swarm that we all partake in this time of year.
We’ve heard the stories of crawfish prices being high this year, but then again , that’s every year. One supplier, out of Eunice, La. says that the prices match last year at this time, and it’s a supply and demand game. As for size, they’re growing every week.
On Claiborne Avenue at Cajun Seafood, the Ngyuen family entertains a constant stream of patrons as one of the top seafood destinations in town.
Siblings Chi and Tai man the busy front of the store, with orders of crabs, and crawfish, and snow crabs, and a host of po-boy selections to choose from.
It’s no secret why folks come to Cajun, because it’s good. Out back Mother Ngyuen and her troops are churning out a host of boiled goodness to choose from. Its only a matter of time before these guys are in a seasoned boiling pot and tummies like yours and mine.
So here’s to Lent and our seafood traditions…may they live happily every Friday during the season.
