KENNER, La. (WGNO) — The Kenner Fire Department is investigating a two-alarm fire at the Chateau Golf & Country Club.
Firefighters responded to the fire in the 3600 block of Chateau Blvd. just before 9 p.m. At the scene, firefighters discovered that the flames were coming from the golf cart storage area where the fire was contained.
“So last night, we had a few events going on in the clubhouse, and I was outside by the pool area with another employee,” Chateau Golf & Country Club general manager Michelle Yenni said. “We were moving some furniture around and heard some loud noises, a little unusual, and that’s when I came out and looked and saw some flames. We immediately called 911.”
The fire was contained to the club’s cart shack. No one was inside, but nearly 70 golf carts were destroyed, and an SUV parked close by was almost unrecognizable.
Officials say more than seven fire trucks were on scene to bring the fire under control.
“So, [Kenner firefighters] are investigating,” Yenni said. “They’re going to work hard to find the cause of the fire. Right now, we don’t suspect any suspicious activity, but all the agencies were here last night. We’re very grateful that KPD was here very fast.”
The fire’s aftermath caused quite the scene Sunday as many club members stopped to look.
“I couldn’t believe it to be honest,” golfer and club member Jeff Gregson said. “I was hoping it wasn’t the club because no one knew at first. We thought it was the clubhouse on fire, which would have been devastating, but luckily, this is something we can recover from.”
Both the staff and members are feeling grateful it wasn’t worse.
“Relief for sure, you know, some people lost their clubs. All that is replaceable,” Gregson said. “Nobody was hurt. But we’re still going to play golf. We’re still going to keep going and supporting the club.”
According to Yenni, they will be working with local companies to replace the golf carts and are hoping to demolish the burned storage space this week.
