New Orleans (WGNO)– City of Gretna officials say Mel is moving!

Since 2009 the bronze statue of Mel Ott has stood in front of the Gretna Visitor’s center at the intersection of Huey P. Long Avenue and 4th street, only blocks away from where he grew up and played as a child.

In the years since the statue was dedicated, a new facility has been built on the Mel Ott Park grounds, the Mel Ott Recreation Center.

After various discussions, it was decided to move his statue to the park and place it in front of the building that is named for him.

A special base has been constructed and the bronze will be set in place Saturday, August 6th at 5:00 in the afternoon.

Please come out and join us in welcoming Mel Ott to his new home on the grounds in front of the building named in his honor.

We know he will serve as an attraction and an inspiration to all of our visitors, especially our young athletes.
