NEW ORLEANS (WGNO)– The woman who drowned in a lagoon at Audubon Park has been identified as 53-year-old Sheila Freedman.

According to the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office, Freedman was homeless and suffering from untreated mental illness.

The coroner’s office said Freedman came to New Orleans about a year ago from Massachusetts. She left behind a husband and two children.

Her body was found floating in an Audubon Park lagoon the morning of Oct. 11.
