MANDEVILLE, La. (WGNO) — The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office reports Mandeville police were conducting a welfare check Friday night when a man shot and killed a woman on Heavens Drive. Moments later, the man was shot and killed by a Mandeville officer.

While the original call was handled by Mandeville police, the investigation into the police shooting is being conducted by the STPSO, at the request of the MPD.

According to STPSO deputies, Mandeville police were conducting a welfare check at a home when an officer heard a woman screaming inside the home. The woman then exited the home and told the officer that a man was inside and threatening to kill her. Moments later, a man also exited the home and shot the woman multiple times.

The Mandeville police officer reportedly took cover and told the man numerous times to drop the gun. The officer also tried to use non-lethal force by tasering the man who then aimed the gun at the officer. At that point, the man was shot by a second MPD officer who responded to the scene.

Both of the people who were shot died at the hospital. No officers were injured.

The St. Tammany Parish coroner later identified the man and the woman as 46-year-old David Vang and 48-year-old Laina Lee.

Saturday morning, the sheriff’s office reported it was still investigating the case and no additional information was available at the time.
