KENNER, La. (WGNO) — A fake license plate patrol initiative in Kenner has led to a total of 87 arrests and citations.

According to the Kenner Police Department, in February, the department began to notice an uptick in vehicles with counterfeit or fictitious license plates.

Officers said this is not uncommon for officers to see during traffic stops, as they also discover drivers that have fake licenses or insurance.

The KPD’s chief instructed the patrol and traffic divisions to proactively enforce and investigate traffic violations involving the plates.

According to the KPD, from Feb. 1 to May 20, the department made the following number of arrests or citations involving fictitious license plates:

  • 31 cases involving a fictitious plate and driver without license or insurance
  • 29 cases involving a fictitious license plate and driver having no license
  • 14 cases involving fictitious plates and the driver having no insurance
  • 13 cases involved a fictitious plate only

Officers also reported that there was a total of nine crashes involving vehicles with fictitious license plates. In six of those, the driver reportedly had no license and insurance and four didn’t have a license.

Officers said the plates can be purchased online, but they warn drivers that if they are caught driving in Kenner, they will be stopped and either arrested or given a ticket.

“Cracking down on those who drive illegally is a top priority for this department. Just follow the rules. It’s very simple. Please ensure your plates are legitimate to avoid fines and legal trouble,” said the chief.
