AMITE, La. (WGNO) — A man is being charged with two counts of attempted murder after allegedly “knocking out” an elderly man and attempting to strangle a 1-year-old girl in Amite on Thursday, June 20.

According to the Amite City Police Department, around 11:38 a.m., officers responded to a call in the 300 block of Gullett Street, reporting that a person had been knocked out.

Police said they arrived on the scene within three minutes and found an unresponsive elderly man, who appeared to have been beaten.

While attempting to help the man, police say 23-year-old Damonte Allen walked out from inside the house with both hands tightly wrapped around the neck of a 1-year-old girl, choking her.

The officers were able to free the infant safely, and though she was initially unresponsive, police were able to perform CPR until she woke up. Acadian Ambulance later brought her to a hospital where she is now in stable condition.

Allen was transported to the Tangipahoa Parish jail.
