Former Orleans Parish Communication District director allowed to leave Louisiana amid indictment

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — A judge has agreed to let former Orleans Parish Communication District director Tyrell Morris leave the state after he was recently indicted on several charges related to a 2023 car crash investigation.

Morris appeared in court, unscheduled, to discuss the matter. His attorney, Brian Capitelli, requested that Morris be allowed to leave in order to address a family emergency with his partner and go on a vacation, for which plane tickets had already been purchased. Morris’s travel was permitted with limitations, including the surrender of his passport prior to traveling.

The prosecution wasn’t opposed to Morris leaving the state, as long as he was fitted with an ankle monitor, though the court refused to consider the use of an ankle monitor unless the prosecution could provide a factual basis for it.

All this is the latest in news about Morris following his indictment last week on charges of malfeasance in office, false personation of a peace officer, insurance fraud and second-degree injuring public records going back to 2023.
