HOUMA, La. (WGNO) — A Houma man is in custody after a caller alleged that he tried to set a house on fire earlier this week.

The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division reported that someone called about a disturbance in the 200 block of Ja Don Drive on Monday, May 27.

When deputies arrived to the scene, the caller alleged that Hunter Lirette, 18, was “attempting to intentionally set fire to the residence using lighter fluid.” The caller also mentioned that he attempted to stop Lirette when it escalated to a physical altercation, and Lirette threatened to “set him on fire.”

While investigating, deputies reported that there was a strong odor of lighter fluid within a home and on the caller.

Deputies began the search for Lirette after learning that he fled the home before they arrived. Deputies said that they later found Lirette hiding in a wooded area near the home and took him into custody.
